On March 13, 2025, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Vice President for Research, Robert Hull, and its Dean of Engineering, Shekar Garde, visited Tohoku University and met with Vice President Masahiro Yamaguchi, Center for Innovative Integrated Electronic Systems Director, Professor Tetsuo Endoh, WISE Program for AI Electronics (AIE) Program Secretary General, Specially Appointed Professor Masami Akamine, and the Global Engagement Division's Specially Appointed Professor Yoichiro Tanaka.

Tohoku University and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute are part of UPWARDS for the FUTURE - a network of partners made up of Micron, the National Science Foundation (NSF) of the United States, Tokyo Electron, and 11 universities from Japan and the United States. These founding members are expected to invest more than $60 million USD towards collaboration in cutting-edge semiconductor education, student learning opportunities, and the promotion of new research activities.

During the meeting, participants introduced the education and research initiatives of their respective institutions. They also discussed how to promote inter-university collaboration within the framework of UPWARDS, focusing on semiconductors, quantum science, and materials science.

In addition, the guests from Rensselaer visited NanoTerasu, the Center for Innovative Integrated Electronic Systems, and the Micro System Integration Center, deepening their understanding of areas for future collaboration and researcher exchange. Exchange between the two institutions is expected to develop further as a result of this visit.
